about

Phil Maguire is an artist from Scotland working with sound. Utilising computers, synthesisers, and tape equipment, Maguire produces music and sound works that explore emptiness and malfunction, of self and of machine. These works are informed by his experience composing, performing, and presenting works across the spectrum of minimalism. They place timbre under the microscope; examining fine details of sound over extended durations, and are often very quiet; very loud; loud made quiet; quiet made loud. Works by Maguire are released on various independent labels including Dinzu Artefacts, Soft Error, Confront Recordings, Resonus Classics, and Hemisphäre. Maguire performs extensively in the UK scene and internationally. Recent performances include Café Oto (UK), POM (NL), Third Space (FIN), Splendor (NL), and FIME (BR). Recorded works are frequently presented at festivals and on radio stations globally. These include Radio CASo (ARG), BBC Radio 3 (UK), L A D I G (ITA), CAMP (FR), and Dublin Digital Radio (IRE). Maguire also performs sampler and electronics in Galvanize Ensemble, and collaborates in projects with musicians including Anne La Berge, James L. Malone, Bill Thompson, Matthijs Kouw, and Eleanor Cully. Maguire runs verz, a tape label and concert series. He lives and works in London. — Scores are available from the British Music Collection Selected recordings are available from the British Library Sound Archive Discography available from: Bandcamp Resonate Discogs Tobira Records (JP) Electric Knife Records (UK) CV — Phil Maguire is een kunstenaar uit Schotland die met geluid werkt.
Bairds of Gartsherrie

2020 Coatbridge is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It has a rich history of industry, particularly iron works, at one time being the world’s largest producer of pig iron. Products made on the Clyde from Coatbridge Iron helped build the industrialised world, and by extension, empire. The history of the town is a patchwork of divides; poverty, greed, industry, technology, heritage. Sometimes known as the Iron Burgh, Coatbridge went from a single house on a fork in the road, to vital centre of the industrial revolution, to struggling post-industrial town in less than 150 years. It is also my family’s hometown. Bairds of Gartsherrie is a piece in two parts: reflections on the weight of the town’s history as well as personal histories within that narrative. They consider the global impact that Coatbridge has made, whilst remaining largely unknown to those out-with the central belt of Scotland. Limited edition cassette available direct from Beartown. Maguire brings his lightness of touch to analog synthesis: freezing textures in space, allowing the listener to suspend themselves in glacial washes of sound. Dutch for ‘nautical mile’, the title is a gentle encouragement towards considerations of stasis and wide expanses; porous borders; connections across distances.
2014-5 I kill a hound. I kill a small hound. I kill a deceitful hound. I kill a worm, wherein there is terror; I kill all his wicked brood. Seven angels from Paradise will help me, that I may do valiantly, and give no more time to the worm to live than while I recite this prayer. - Ancient Irish prayer. smll hnd / dctfl hnd [for the great worm] is a re-release of an album I made in 2014. Now downloadable for a bargain price, and an additional bonus track (download only)! Blurb from original release (Richard Anthony, Drone Warfare Tapes): "It derives from a collection of sound games: Phil played with sounds ranging from hard drives, boilers, and old tracks obscured by stacked FX, fascinated by the details and various levels of sound processing. What results is a collection of static sound pieces and gorgeous ambient drones interrupted by discordant industrial clangs and radio interference akin to Ian Martin’s Mechanical Rain. smll hnd / dctfl hnd could almost be an alternate soundtrack to Jonathan Glazer’s Under The Skin: it’s the sound of 21st century existence; alienated and frozen, yet luminous and thriving in liminal spaces." Reviews: Tiny Mix Tapes - "this tape tears at the very fabric...as if to say its 50 copies are truly 5 million. All those zeroes buzzing and clawing among the stacked sounds of lives being lead outside the metropolitan. The static of hard wired electricity navigating empty fields and lonely roadways; the longing of distant lovers across the world; the sine waves of incomplete thoughts feelings fighting each other over which shall prevail." smll hnd / dctfl hnd [for the great worm] by Phil Maguire.

Anne La Berge (US/NL) and Phil Maguire’s (SCO) musical partnership has included ongoing musical and video collaborations including concerts and releases in both the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Their work has been described as experimental within the electro-acoustic musical style. They play at volume levels much softer than mainstream electronic music and the acoustic instrument in their duo is an electronically processed flute. They enjoy playing for relatively small audiences where the intimacy of detailed sonic textures and slow-moving soundscapes is shared by everyone in the room. They have performed at Hundred Years Gallery in London, POM in Eindhoven and are considered a house band in Splendor Amsterdam. Their works are named after cities. To date they have released two albums on verz, and produced one audiovisual piece (Site V), commissioned by the Dutch Embassy in London and supported by VOLSAP Foundation. Site V was displayed at iklectik’s Off-site online exhibition space October 2020 - January 2021, and was subsequently released on Carrier Records (US). .
